CV job positions 'must be relevant'

People applying for a new job must ensure that that any previous job positions are placed in a relevant place on their resume, according to one expert.

Peter Panayotou, senior analyst at the Write Stuff, said that many people make the mistake of putting every single job position in the same place on their CV, when they should really only include jobs which are relevant to the position they are applying for in a prominent place.

He advised that any other previous job positions should be included later in the resume or even excluded.

"That's a way of minimising a job that you don't particularly want to highlight because it may not reflect what you want to do. Therefore it doesn't get too much attention by the potential employer when they are looking at the CV," he explained.

The expert's comments came after a survey by Badenoch & Clark found that one in four professionals were forced to take jobs they were over-qualified for, or in a sector unrelated to their core career, during the economic downturn.
