Companies creating job descriptions must make them transparent so that applicants know exactly what is expected of them, according to one expert.
Sector analyst Veena Davis, writing for the Herald Bulletin, said that many firms make the mistake of creating a job description which is too convoluted and does not enable the candidate to adequately prepare for an interview.
She also observed that many job descriptions use hidden meanings which suggest one thing and actually mean another.
According to the expert, firms which do not accurately inform applicants about what they can expect to be doing in the job may encounter problems later on when the issue is raised by the member of staff.
"It's also widely known that when your job description states that some overtime might be required, you will be working some overtime each night and some more each weekend, and probably not be adequately compensated," Ms Davis explained.
Recently, Ted Holt, writing for IT Jungle, said that job descriptions are both undervalued and under appreciated, with many companies failing to fully utilise the online resources at their disposal.
